NEW YORK (Reuters) - A judge on Monday accused a former U.S. corrections officer of lying about being sexually assaulted by a female inmate, prompting the federal judge to order her to face charges.
The judge at a preliminary hearing in Manhattan accused former corrections officer John Patrick Green III of lying about being raped in his cell in July 2011 by a woman he identified as his "friend." Green, a 48-year-old father of three, had denied the charge.
Prosecutors argued that Green used the alleged incident as a way to deal with problems in his marriage, in a case that has sparked debate about the use of jailhouse informants and could add to pressure on the U.S. criminal justice system to reduce the number of prison inmates.
Green's lawyer, William Fischer, said the case was about a job applicant who gave false information in an attempt to get the job.
"I'm glad the truth is coming out," Fischer said. "My client is innocent."
Prosecutors had said that Green approached a woman at a correction facility in Manhattan last year and agreed to be her cellmate in exchange for a lower sentence on charges of passing bad checks. The woman, identified as V.S., would later claim she was sexually assaulted and sought to have Green charged.
